Dental oncology is a broad term which includes prevention, diagnosis and treatment planning with necessary referrals for oral cancers and dental treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy /radiotherapy for cancers. Oral cancer is most common type of cancer in Indian men and third most common in Indian women. It’s because of rampant tobacco use, poor oral hygiene and delay in diagnosis. As prevention is better than cure, early detection of pre-malignant lesions (signs prior to cancer development) and prevention of turning it in to full blown cancer is key to success. This deals in dental rehabilitation of patients who have undergone cancer surgeries or met with accidents or born with birth defects. The patients, who undergo surgery for upper jaw tumors, suffer lot of challenges in day to day life. This includes difficulty in eating, swallowing and speaking. A well planned ‘Obturator’ prosthesis not only improves their aesthetics but also overall quality of life. As per need, possibility and requirement of the patient various types of obturator prosthesis are fabricated at Ace Dental.
Similarly, after lower jaw surgeries, patients suffer from jaw deviation to such an extent that they cannot chew food. A ‘Bite guide prosthesis’ is treatment of choice for these patients. With the use of Bite guide prosthesis, patients jaw deviation gets corrected and they can lead near normal life. Congenital defects (by birth defects) are difficult to treat. This mainly includes cleft lip and jaw (palate) where the lips or jaw bone fails to join together. Feeding plate obturator helps in resuming milk consumption in these babies till their repair surgeries are done. Dentofacial orthopaedics and nasoalveolar moulding is also offered to deserving patients.
Missing organs like eye, ear, nose, finger due to accident or surgery are cause of worry for few patients. They become introvert and lack confidence. Aesthetic replacement of these structures with medical grade silicone prosthesis (anaplastology) is possible. In India very few centre’s provide anaplastology services.
